Perfect Weekend: The Catskills

By Raina Kelley

If your thought when hearing “Catskills” is “Woodstock ’69,” it’s time for an updated visit. Located 120 miles north of New York City, the area encompasses the counties abutting the Catskill Mountains. Here are our suggestions for a fun-filled weekend:

Lodging: Kate’s Lazy Meadow in Mt. Tremper, N.Y. is a laid-back and funky motel founded by B-52s singer Kate Pierson. Stay in an Airstream trailer or one of nine theme rooms (from $175; lazymeadow.com). The Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz has a 30,000-square foot spa and 85 miles of trails (from $275; mohomk.com). The psychedelic Roxbury Motel is just five minutes from Plattekill Mountain and snowtubing (from $99; theroxburymotel.com).

Dining: Sweet Sue’s in Phoenicia is a local fave that has fabulous pancakes of every variety (845-688-7852). Stop at Gigi Trattoria in Rhinebeck for flatbread pizza known as skizzas (gigitrattoria.com). For dinner, go to Peekamoose Restaurant for the braised short ribs (peekamooserestaurant.com).

Play: If shopping is your idea of a perfect day, Bowerbird is a hip housewares store in Catskill that sells vintage as well as modern goods (518-943-5776). In Woodstock, use the Golden Notebook bookstore as a starting point to explore the town and all its boutiques and ever-present hippies. If you’re looking for the site of Woodstock ’69, keep driving. Max’s farm is 43 miles southwest, in Bethel. Tip: bring a GPS, so if you go off the beaten path to see the Catskills’ beautiful mountain views, you’ll know how to get back.
