Tucked within the quaint village of historic Roxbury lies a newly renovated boutique motel that will surely pique the senses of any visitor. The Roxbury opened its chartreuse colored doors in July, after an exciting yearlong renovation process.
Gregory Henderson and Joseph Massa, the creative minds the project, have dedicated themselves and their company, Masserson Properties, to the renovation, development, and management of top quality lodging facilities for the discerning traveler.
The eleven-unit motel is comprised of studios, kitchenettes and suites decorated in soothing, crisp colors that invite imagination and relaxation. With the backdrop of the majestic Catskills as their inspiration, Henderson and Massa have infused the motelÕs urban interiors with the natural beauty of the rural outdoors.
While visiting The Roxbury, guests will have all the Catskill outdoor activities at their fingertips, including skiing, golfing, hiking, fishing, biking, tubing, kayaking and canoeing.
Massa stated, ÒWe would never have entered into this enormous project if the property was not situated in a region so rich with wonderful year-round outdoor activities.
Each room has its own unique color scheme that combines both the texture and light to create a playful atmosphere. An eclectic array of chairs and light fixtures was collected from local auctions and artisans to decorate each room. Chairs in different tones of blue from RobertÕs Auction served as the inspiration to HendersonÕs creation of the Sapphire Rooms, while two funky lamps from the Mystery Spot in Phoenicia prompted the creation of the "Austin Powers Room," where guests can revisit the past while enjoying the modern conveniences available to them.
In addition to normal lodging amenities, guests of The Roxbury enjoy a host of additional perks similar to luxury hotels all over the world. All rooms include high-speed Internet access at "Internet Stations" located in each room at no extra cost; TVs with DVD players and MP3 CD playback; air conditioners; Egyptian cotton towels, extra-plush, extra-long pillowtop mattresses, wet bar sinks, microwaves, refrigerators, and duel shower heads. The Roxbury is also handicapped accessible and accommodates guests with special needs.
With all the modern services The Roxbury has to offer, it makes for a great place for offsite business conferences, while providing professionals with a comfortable atmosphere that will make work enjoyable.
The genuine friendliness of both Massa and Henderson will also add to the unique atmosphere that guests will enjoy. Those visiting The Roxbury will find that checking in is both pleasurable and hassle-free. Guests are welcomed with complimentary wine and cheese along with the unique interior of both a sitting room and dining area.
Both Henderson and Massa come from theater backgrounds and each spent over 20 years acting, directing, and producing plays in Manhattan as well as over 15 cities across the country. They’ve treated the renovation of The Roxbury like another theatrical production focusing on colors, fabrics, textures, and lighting just as they would if they were building a film set of designing the lighting for a play.
In addition to running a theater company for over 10 years, Massa built sets for the Metropolitan Opera, Saturday Night Live, and NBC. Massa noted, "I would have never known how to do what we’ve done to the construction of The Roxbury without that experience." Massa directed and produced Henderson’s one-man theatrical production "Whirlwind!" After touring the country for five years, Henderson switched gears and began working on Wall Street. During this time Henderson and Massa sought the peaceful serenity of the Catskills and bought their first property in Andes.
Henderson and Massa purchased The Roxbury last year from Francis McArdle, and began construction right away, with the help of many local contractors. Gary Hinkley originally built the motel in the early 1960’s, while the house, which is used as the main office, was constructed in 1862.
Last winter brought about many challenges for both Henderson and Massa, including multiple burst pipes and flooding, yet through it all the duo worked tirelessly to create a unique vacation getaway.
Until December 15, The Roxbury will be offering a 10 percent discount on all of its rooms and suites for local citizens of Delaware, Ulster and Otsego counties. For more information about The Roxbury and other Masserson Properties, visit www.catskillvacationlodging.com or call 607.326.7200.
